Freshwater Fishing in Alaska

Freshwater fishing for trout, steelhead, and salmon provides a refreshing change of pace from saltwater fishing and a great opportunity to experience the pristine beauty of our local rivers and streams.

Some streams can be accessed by our local roads but the blue-ribbon streams are accessed by boat or floatplane.

Fly fishermen and spin casters will both enjoy top quality equipment and the right lures for the situation.

You are welcome to use your own equipment and experiment with your own secret lures and flies.

Steelhead fishing is best in late April and May.

Fishing for Cutthroat and Dolly Varden trout is best in May, June, and early July.

Sockeye, Pink and Chum salmon move into streams in July and Coho salmon enter streams in September.

Casting spinners, spoons, and jigs on spinning rods or fly casting are very effective methods for all species.  Some wading is required on most streams so chest waders or hip boots are recommended. They are an absolute must for fly fishing.

I strongly encourage catch and release on all trout and salmon in these streams - these are extremely delicate systems that cannot sustain a catch and take fishery.
