Gustavus is fifty miles west of Juneau and is surrounded by Glacier Bay National Park. Icy Strait is the northern entrance to the Inside Passage that extends to the Puget Sound. This rural community of nearly 500 has a strong appreciation of its honest and open country lifestyle. Fishing, tourism, and construction are the primary occupations in Gustavus. The Salmon River runs through town, where occasional visitors include moose, eagles and maybe a bear or two.
