The Weather
Gustavus is not the land of Eskimos and igloos but if you don't bring the right clothing you risk being quite uncomfortable. The weather in this area is constantly changing and often wet! Daytime temperatures average 55 to 65 degrees and drop into the low forties at night. On the water you can expect afternoon winds to fifteen knots. You want to stay dry! Rubber boots and light rain gear are an absolute must! They will keep you dry and provide great windbreaks. On the optimistic side - bright sunshine and temperatures in the eighties occasionally occur and if the wind lays down it can be unbearably hot on the open water. Bring some shorts and T-shirts. Layered clothing is the secret to comfort: a T-shirt covered by a sweatshirt covered by a sweater or light jacket will generally keep you comfortable. Jeans and wool socks should complete the outfit. You will probably want a hat of some sort and some wool gloves if your hands get cold easily. Don't forget your sunscreen and sunglasses - optimism!
Things to Bring
I recommend bringing camera or video equipment; you will be heartbroken if you don't! Bring all personal items and medicines you require - it is a long way to the drug store! Most of the Inns serve beer and wine. There is a liquor store in Gustavus. Due to limitations on checked baggage try to limit yourself to one bag. This will enable you to bring at least one box of fish home at no additional cost. Try to avoid large rigid suitcases. They are difficult to stow in small airplanes. Familiarize yourself with changes in airline rules regarding checked baggage weight requirements and limitations on carry-on baggage. Insect repellent is not necessary; we generally have little problem with mosquitoes and flies.
